Written by Auguste Levasseur, private secretary to General Lafayette
Translated from the French by Alan R. Hoffman

Alan Hoffman’s masterful translation of a classic French text recounting General Lafayette’s farewell tour of America in 1824-25 provides an invaluable and fascinating insight into a memorable event in American social and cultural history.

The beloved Lafayette, accompanied by his private secretary Auguste Levasseur, was regaled as a hero of the American Revolution in his tour across 24 states and in his visits with five presidents. His travels in New England took him through Connecticut along the Post Road in Darien, and he was greeted everywhere in an adoring frenzy by crowds of both ordinary and extraordinary citizens.hoffman

Join us as Mr. Hoffman describes this historic tour and his own journey into the world of Lafayette.
