“Darien’s character is created by its history, and our history is preserved as well as shared for future generations solely by The Darien Historical Society. Without history, Darien becomes Everytown, USA, a town without distinction or a sense of community.”

Marian Castell, Darien Town Historian

2Darien is defined by its common historical experiences, the awareness of which builds unity, a sense of place, civic pride and communal responsibility for Darien. Awareness of these community qualities further engenders volunteerism, public service and participation in town ceremonies that have particular importance in this town. Our historic past is an important influence for each of us today and tomorrow.

A strong visual history also surrounds us: Darien’s unique collection of architecture, the rhythm of her streetscapes, our open green spaces and our fields bordered by historic stone walls and the well-tended beauty of gardens and landscaping. These elements all combine to make up Darien’s very special character, absorbed by its residents, and, in turn, reflected in our attitude and behavior toward the town.

It is in The Darien Historical Society, alone, that the records of how Darien's individual character and sense of self have been defined, and it is the Society's responsibility to preserve as well as share the story of Darien's character, distinction and community awareness so that these qualities will continue with future generations. Without history Darien becomes Anytown, USA.

Historical awareness, combined with pride in our town, is the engine that drives Darien toward the future. Your financial support of The Darien Historical Society and your active participation in our many events is of vital importance to keep that engine moving. Come join us! The Darien Historical Society, a 501(c) (3) organization, serves as the local history resource of Darien, through its acquisition and preservation of original photographs, documents, books and artifacts, and provides community access to these primary resources through exhibitions, lectures and educational programs, as well as through its public library. The Darien Historical Society receives no funding from the Town of Darien. We rely entirely on private funding received from membership dues and contributions as well as from our program revenue and merchandise sales.

Member-support is crucial for us to maintain our mission.

Thank you.
